How many threads make a deal "multi-threaded"?
Three or more active conversations across different functions inside the account. Two contacts in the same function (two SDRs, two AEs) doesn't count. Those are the same thread.
What's the impact of multi-threading on deal close rates?
Multi-threaded deals close at 2 to 3x the rate of single-threaded deals and survive champion turnover. Single-threaded deals are the leading cause of late-stage stalls.
When in the deal cycle should an AE start multi-threading?
In discovery. Asking "who else should be involved?" in the first call sets expectations. Waiting until proposal stage to widen the conversation reads as desperation and usually fails.
How do you multi-thread without burning the champion?
Always tell the champion before reaching out to their colleagues, and frame the outreach as "making sure we understand the broader requirements" rather than going around them. Champions support multi-threading they're aware of; they kill multi-threading they discover.
Can SDRs multi-thread or only AEs?
SDRs can identify and warm a second thread (typically the technical evaluator role); deeper multi-threading is the AE's job. SDR-led multi-threading past two contacts usually creates friction with the AE handoff.
