Tom Tunguz's analysis of about 20 fast-growth SaaS companies found that most hired their first VP of Sales in the third year after founding.
The first sales leader hire is one of the clearer buying signals in B2B. A new VP of Sales or Head of Sales inherits a founder-led motion and usually rebuilds it within months: contact data, CRM, sales engagement, compensation and recruiting tools get chosen or replaced.
This list ranks venture-backed startups that posted a VP of Sales, Head of Sales or CRO role in the last 90 days while showing no current sales leader in Landbase people data, ordered by 12-month headcount growth. Each company's listing, funding and leadership were then checked against public sources.
Every company on the list had to meet four criteria:
Most companies showing the signal had exactly one matching posting, so the ranking is by 12-month headcount growth among companies showing the signal rather than by posting count.
Job postings measure open requisitions in Landbase's job-posting index over 90 days. Roles can be reposted or filled soon after the snapshot, and people data can lag a recent hire, so the signal shows intent rather than a confirmed hire. One candidate, Heron, was removed because its Head of Sales listing names a co-founder who already serves as CRO.

A multi-country Nordic and Benelux sales build needs local-language outreach and real estate owner and housing association contact data.
First, the companies are early. Eight of the ten are at seed or Series A stage, and six announced a round in 2026. Several listings state outright that this is the first sales leadership hire (Simple AI, Rivia, Farsight, proprty.ai), and Agave says its CEO has been acting head of sales since the company started.
Second, the roles are player-coach seats. Simple AI, Metriport, Agave and proprty.ai all ask the hire to close deals while building the team, and most listings require in-office work.
Third, AI products dominate, and most postings appeared in August and September 2026, often weeks after a new round. Voice agents (Simple AI, Hello Patient, telli), healthcare data (Metriport), financial services workflows (Farsight), clinical trial data (Rivia) and construction financials (Agave) account for most of the list.
For GTM teams, a first sales leader posting is more useful when paired with funding, headcount growth, existing SDR hiring and data enrichment than when read alone. Related Landbase rankings cover companies hiring the most SDRs and AI startups adding headcount fastest.
All ten go-to-market hiring signals in this series are collected in GTM Hiring Signals to Watch in 2026.
The ranking in this article was built from Landbase job-posting and people data. A search matched recent sales leader postings against people data, filtered by employee count and funding, and ranked the results by headcount growth.

A first sales leader workflow could, for example, find Series A and B companies with 20 to 300 employees that posted a VP of Sales or Head of Sales role in the last 60 days and have no sales leader on staff, then return the CEO's contact details now and flag the account when a VP of Sales appears in people data.
The Landbase CLI setup supports these workflows from a standard terminal and from AI coding environments including Claude Code and Codex.
Among venture-backed startups with 20 to 300 employees, the fastest-growing companies showing the signal in Landbase data were Simple AI, Hello Patient, telli, Rivia and Metriport, followed by Farsight, Artificial Labs, Turnkey, Agave and proprty.ai.
It usually means a founder-led sales motion has found enough traction to hand over, often after a new round. The incoming leader typically sets up forecasting, compensation, hiring plans and the sales tool stack within the first months.
They show intent, not confirmed hires. Roles can be reposted, filled quickly or removed, as with Farsight's listing, and people data can lag a recent hire, so each company should be checked before outreach.

Teams can monitor sales leadership postings, check whether a sales leader already exists in people data, and combine that with funding and headcount growth. Landbase supports this through job-posting and people data, enrichment, structured datasets and web and CLI workflows.
